General Notes: | |
.) | This list is about radio type trigger equipment, not about IR triggers. IR triggers are very limited in use (IR depends on low light conditions; can't transmit through optical barriers between transmitter and receiver, has a very limited range and most of the IR devices can't handle preflash and thus don't work flawlessly with E-TTL only cameras and flashes etc.) and cost at least the same like the cheaper solutions of the radio stuff above. Radio triggers are available in all imaginable variants for studio and on-camera flash systems (again I'm concentrating on on-camera models here (they all mount into the camera's hot shoe (transmitter) or provide a hot shoe to mount on-camera flash units (receiver)), and some of them can even be used as remote shutter release for the camera as well over great distance. |
.) | Basically every flash model with an X-Contact can be used on the triggers, but most if not all of the triggers can't handle high trigger voltages. A massive list of mostly vintage X-Contact and non-AF TTL flashes with trigger voltage measurements can be found here. Take care. |
.) | Another hint about recommended flash models: Canon Speedlites 270EX, 420EX, 430EX II and 550EX have very low radio noise emission and are thus more reliable than 430EX, 580EX and 580EX II models, which emit very high noise ratios. Thanks to LPA Design for this piece of information. |
.) | Studio Strobes with built-in radio module or upgrade slots: There are several Profoto (all models), Photogenic, Norman, Bowens (Gemini R and Pro models) and Dyna-Lite studio strobes available that are either equipped by default or by modular upgrade with a drop-in style Bowens or PocketWizard receiver. |
.) | Other equipment with optional radio module upgrades: There was a PocketWizard Upgrade for the Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n. It is undocumented, whether this was also possible with/available for the Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c. There are also some light meters, which can be upgraded with radio modules (see Sekonic for an example in the list above). |
.) | Add an additional weight of 8g for CR2450 power cells. Add an additional weight of (approx.) 23g per alkaline AA power cell, 15g per lithium AA, 31g per rechargeable AA Ni-MH. LRV08s (aka A23) are 12V 23A alkaline batteries, that consist of 8x LR932 cells. |
.) | See DPanswers for a general review and comparison of different radio trigger systems for getting started. |
