  • The OSK-E3 (2007 ~ 2010) is a software solution to help protect the access to and authenticity of images. It offers image encryption (the images can only be opened/viewed by someone with the correct decryption key) and checks the image's hash key (refer to your camera's custom functions) allowing to determine whether an image, including its EXIF data like for example GPS information, was altered or compromised after recording it. The older DVKs just do the verification without offering encryption. For full compatibility of the OSK a secondary SD memory slot is required (without it the OSK-E3 encryption doesn't work, so only the authenticity verification will be available*).
     
    In January 2011 Canon published the following customer information:
     
    "It has come to our attention that image data may be altered in a way that causes the image originality verification function of the affected products [... above ...] to make incorrect determinations about whether the images being verified with these products are authentic.
     
    Information about altering image data has been posted on non-Canon Web sites [sic!] after an independent, third-party analysis of the firmware and data structure of compatible Canon products [analysis done by ElcomSoft, author's annotation]. This information can be used to alter image data with the aim of causing incorrect determinations of authenticity."
     
    Canon seemed to be clueless, how to deal with it. They usually give customer information about how they will solve problems, like announcing upcoming firmware updates or (very often free of charge) physical service to address issues. They didn't this time, which actually kinda doesn't surprise me (although I'm sure they did address this particular issue in later updates). In general every digital form of data can be hacked (just a matter of interest and effort). So although it is a good attempt to offer a solution helping to protect the photographer's work for one and flow of authentic, uncompromiseable information for another one, this solution is not bulletproof either. At least to my ears the above information renders the OSK and DVKs as pretty much useless, especially considering their price and resulting limitations.
     
    The OSK-E3 has been discontinued (the DVKs anyway). It is not mentioned in any of the manuals or datasheets released for the latest camera models, including 600D and 1100D in 2011 and 60Da and 5D Mark III in 2012.
     

    *I checked some manuals there. The manuals for EOS 50D, 60D and 7D for example give incompatibility with the camera's image data for reason. But in fact they don't even feature SD slots.
